What happens if you..............?

Have no health insurance and something terrible happens to you like a major injury or cancer or something? How do you get treated? Or do you even get treated?





Does anyone here work in a hospital billing department or with social services and could tell me. It's something I worry about constantly as there have been times when I've had no insurance. What about dental emergencies?





I live in Texas, in case that matters.

check and see if there is any clinics in your area that can see you based on your income i know some places have them.
Reply:Emergency rooms are required to treat patients no matter if they have insurance or not. The patients are later billed, and over half the time, the bills end up being write off's or going to collections.





As far as dental procedures, those are a little harder to come by-ER's will just treat the pain and refer you to a dentist and lots of dentist will make you pay up front if you don't have insurance.
Reply:I worked in a a hospital/health care for over 6 years. If you become sick and have to be rushed to the emergency room...they will treat you first and ask questions about insurance later. New laws (national laws) also state that no one can be turned down at a hospital for no insurance. Many hospitals even have funds and low cost billing to people without insurance. I used to work in a n emergency room and we NEVER asked if someone had insurance before treating them....don't worry about it.....as far as dental emergencies go I can't really say....my advice if you have a dental emergency would be to go to a dental walk in / emergency center
Reply:no hospital (e.r. or specialty) can refuse service to anyone. Sometimes there are people in accounting and billing at the hospital who will work out a payment plan for treatment after all is done and they know exactly how much will be billed to you. Sometimes, they will call Social Servies and have a worker come down and talk to you and sometimes try to get Medicaid paperwork started.
