Amoxoyclin? Please Help?
Normal dental amoxicillan is taken 3 times daily (500mg strength) It works immediately but can take 48-72 in have high enough levels in the blood stream for you and I to start noticing any improvement. Hang in there as it is doing it's job. While it's in the "kicking in" stage as I refer to it for my patients, I recommend OTC meds such as Ibuprofen for pain. Be careful on how much you take of that. Remember this as a rule for Ibuprofen. If you take one pill (200mg) you can take it every 2 hours. If you take two pills (total 400mg) then only take them every 4 hours. 600mg only every 6 hours and 800mg only ever 8 hours. Never exceed 2400mg in a 24 hour period. This will play havoc with your kidneys and livers. Just hang in there and you will start feeling better soon.

Reply:The 'moxy will probably start working within a day. I've had it lots of times, and I always start feeling better the next day...or the day after that at the latest. Just take the pills as directed and you'll start feeling better pretty quickly.
Reply:This is a antibiotic, it is the kind of drug that takes time to build up in your system so don't expect miracles over night. It is mainly used to combat infection and not a painkiller. You should have asked for percocet, motrin (800 mg.) (take 2 for maximum effect). I know it hurts, try to sleep it off.
Reply:It sounds like you have an absessed tooth, which can be very painful. The nerve of the tooth in infected and is trying to swell but it has nowhere to go so pressure and pain have started to build up within the canal of your tooth where the nerve is. The amoxicillin will take care of most of the infection, which will eventually lessen most of the pain, but it usually takes about 24 hours after the first dose to get into your system and actually start to work. So if you are in that much pain, why did they not get you some kind of pain medication to take in the meantime while you are waiting on the antibiotic to start kicking in? Best thing I know to recommend until you can get to the dentist on Monday is to take 800mg's of Ibuprofen or Motrin. It can help with the inflammation (swelling) as well as the pain and will hopefully tide you over til Monday. Even when you start to feel better, it is important that you finish all the antibiotic as prescribed.
