My 8 year old just broke his front tooth in half. What should I do?

His brother jumped on him and broke his new adult tooth. The tooth hasn't even come in all the way yet and now half of it's gone. Can it be repaired? Does he need an emergency dental appointment?

Geez! My eight year old did that too! He's 16 now and still has the chip!

If the break is vertical, take him to a dentist IMMEDIATELY! If it's horizontal, you may want to wait. If he's athletic (with a brother like that I hope so!), it may wind up breaking again.

And mine likes his. It was a horizontal break, just after the tooth came in. He never wanted it fixed. Go figure.
Reply:yes it can be repaired but u must go to the dentist ASAP!!!
Reply:Yes, call the dental office for an emergency appointment.
Reply:I would take him to the emergency room!!
Reply:Yes. Hurry!
Reply:They can either pull the tooth and put in a 'denture' tooth in that spot or they can use bonding/porcelain caps to make it look better.

As long as it doesn't hurt and no nerve is exposed, he can probably wait until his next dental visit. If he's not in excruciating pain, call the dentist in the morning. If he's in a fair amount of pain, call your office and see if the dentist has a pager.
Reply:Owweee!

First of all smack his brother on the butt. And then just call your dentist and ask them what they think.

I'm not sure about emergency appointment though. I agree if he isn't in much pain - it's not like its going to rot over night or anything.
Reply:hurry, go to the dentist, put it in some milk to save the root
Reply:Yes, call for emergency instructions on how to preserve

the tooth until you can get to a dentist...

Probably in the fridge will work...

Reply:I am a dental hygienist who has seen this happen a lot! First of all, call the dentist first thing in the morning. They will ask you some questions to determine how serious it is. It sounds like it is a horizontal break, in which case it can definitely be saved. It may need root canal treatment though, depending on how severe the break is. If this is the case, it will also need a crown to further protect the tooth once the nerve has been removed. Even if it doesn't need RCT, the tooth can be restored to look just like the natural tooth. My best advice is to save the tooth at all cost! This is a permanent front tooth that will give your child either a positive or negative self-image. Good Luck!
Reply:It doesn't need to be immediate. I went to the ER when I chipped my front one recently, waited for 4 hours and told me to to go to my regular dentist that monday.

When I went to my dentist, she was able to bond it and it's been fine since.
