Is a dental abscess classed as an emergency?im in agony&dont think i can wait til after the holidays!?

I would say it is. I just got back from treating a patient. The thing is, he woke up at 5 AM with pain and had not a hint of pain before that. If you have an abscess that has been bothering you for a week or so and you just decided that you plain old can't take it any longer, I'd say it is a case of poor planning and not an emergency. If you call your dentist, tell him that it just started hurting this morning, even if it's a lie.

Is a dental abscess classed as an emergency?im in agony%26amp;dont think i can wait til after the holidays!?
It certainly sounds like an emergency to me. Good luck!
Reply:Yes.
Reply:yes it is only get worse
Reply:I had one a few years ago and was seen as an emergency patient. If it bursts it could spread into the blood stream and cause all sorts of problems.
Reply:Get on to the emergency dentists. They'll give you some antibiotics to clear up the abscess. Then see your ordinary dentist when you've finished the antibiotics.
Reply:yes your in pain i think you should go to a dentist i know where i live in bklyn my dentist is in my mall and they have dentist on weekends maybe the same by you call around for one if your in that much pain i am sure you can find one
Reply:My brother had this and had to go to the emergency room vs his dentist once. They gave him antibiotics to keep the infection from spreading any worse, and maybe some Lortabs for pain until he could get to his dentist.
Reply:It can be. If you have any swelling on your face near your eye get it seen to straight away as this is very dangerous.
Reply:Yes!!!!!!!!! Please go see a dentist right away! Due the the way blood will flow from the abcess, it can infect your sinuses which can infect your central nervous system (your brain) leading to serious problems. Don't wait before you do serious damage to yourself.
Reply:Yes, I know how you feel, you must be in terrible pain. Phone an emergency dentist ASAP.
Reply:There may be an NHS emergency dentist in your area (may not). If you're registered with a GP call your out of hours service and they may have details of an emergency dental service in your area, but it won't be until tomorrow morning.

In London there is a private dental service available 24/7, pricey, but if you're desperate.........
Reply:ouch, i know how you feel, i know your not meant to, but pop it if you can see it, its instant relief, and make sure you wash your mouth with salt water to keep it clean, salt with boiled water (keep the water as warm as you can bare), i have done this a number of times after my dad told me too, because i couldnt get to the hospital! (im 23)
Reply:if you cant get to see an emergency dentist(and yes it can be the case)then go to a%26amp;e cos they will give you antibiotics as you will need them asap.wish you all the best
Reply:A warm salt water rinse might be soothing.

Then call your dentist. She or he should have an answering service. Please let the service know that you are not looking for any drug other than an antibiotic! The answering service should call/page your dentist and let her or him know that it is real and it is urgent. You should be able to see your dentist or the dentist on call this weekend. They may send you to the ER and that will work just as well! so Good luck, I really feel for you! - dd
Reply:It depends on what u percieve as EMERGENCY.If you consider emergency as a LIFE-THREATENING or DEBILITATING CONDITION than obvioulsy dental abscess is not an emergency.

but otherwise dental abscess is a dental disease which has pain, discomfort and infection associated. with it. basically its a condition which is caused in advance to pulpitis(a condition known as infection of pulp, the root part of tooth)and that infection is basically caused by advanced stage of CARIES(or cavity formation by bacteria)...

DENTAL ABSCESS can lead to further complication such as granuloma formation or cyst formation and infection could spread.but having said that these things take a long time to occur so u could go on with dental abscess for 1-2 years or even more before changes start to take place...

disadvantages of not treating dental abscess apart from pain is obvioulsy the spread of infection, swelling and further damage of the tooth...a stage could take place where the only option left is to remove the tooth...

its best for ur tooth and due to the pain factor to treat dental abscess soon. having said that dont worry regarding the emergency thing.it wont actually destroy ur lif or something like that...

so just go to the dentist,,the sooner the better and get ur dental abscess treated, hopefully it would fade away and u wil go on with ur life....best of luck
Reply:It can be...you wont get help from a doctor as its dental...been there suffered, this time last year...two paracetamol and two ibruprofen help ease the pain...will also help when you get the antibiotics...however if you get a good dentist, the one I went to cut into the abscess to release the poison...he actually used my case at a seminar...by cutting it he released the pain...then had antibiotics to help then the cheap cure... GOOD LUCK
Reply:Ive just phoned my emergency dental service and got an appointment with a hospital dentist tomorrow morning, because I am in agony with a cavity/nerve pain, and theres no way I can last 2 more days and 3 nights of pain (all night long) til tuesday. If you are in agony, tell them you cant last, my emergency service seemed to have quite a few appointment times available. Good luck.
Reply:Do you really want that infection to stay in your mouth. Go go now.
Reply:HELLO MADDOGGIE,

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO FIND A DENTIST TO SEE YOU FOR THIS ABCESS, THEN VISIT AN EMERGENCY ROOM TO START ON ANTIBIOTICS AND PAIN MEDICATION.

AN ABCESS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS.

THEN MAKE AN APPOINTMET TO SEE A DENTIST A.S.A.P.
Reply:Yes, yes, yes! Call your dentist's emergency number right now. If you don't have one, go to the emergency room. An abscess is an infection, it could get worse, spread, cause all kinds of problems. If you're in that much pain, you need immediate relief.
Reply:get yourself to the ER and they can help you. If you're asking an insurance ? I don't think it is, but don't stay in agony any longer than you have to!
Reply:You can go to the local nhs walk in centre if you cannot get in at the dentist, or there is always an emergency dentist open.Y ou will need a course of anti biotics before any work can be done on the tooth.
Reply:Yes.
